Botanical Interests "Brazilian Vervain" Verbena Seeds

Perennial to USDA zones 7 - 11. (Grow as an annual in cooler climates.) Blooms in summer until first frost. Full sun to light shade. 3' - 6' tall. Stunning 2 - 3" rose-violet to lavender flower clusters on tall, see-through foliage. Though it has strong stems, Brazilian Vervain (Verbena bonariensis) creates a light, airy wave of color for any spot on the flowerbed. This tall verbena can be used for height in the back of the border, placed as a see-through accent in the front, or massed for color. Very attractive to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Reseeds itself easily - a welcome volunteer! Also called Purpletop Verbena, Purpletop Vervain, South American or Brazilian Verbena. This striking Verbena was brought from Buenos Aires, Argentina to England in the early 1700's. A native of South America, the name, 'bonariensis' means 'from Buenos Aires'.

When to plant outside: Sow in spring, 2-4 weeks before average last frost.

When to start inside: Sow 10-12 weeks before average last frost.

Special Germination Instructions: Seed requires darkness to germinate. Cover seed with soil at recommended depth of 1/4" or press lightly into soil and cover with black plastic. Remove plastic as soon as sprouts appear. "
